Intergeneric Hybrids

Mehrgattungshybriden Orchideen

Intergeneric Hybrids are crossings of various genera, such as Oncidium and Odontoglossum. This yields Odontocidium.

The most well-known Intergeneric Hybrids are Colmanara, Beallara, Brassidium or Miltonidium. Often three or more genera are crossed in, so that one can no longer infer from the name from which original genres they originated. Here, the breeder has tried to combine the best qualities of each variety. If out of a propagation rate of 2,000 to 3,000 plants 1-2 plants stand out, they can continue to produce and bring them to market.

Special orchid care instructions for Intergeneric Hybrids

Most origins come from South and Central America and therefore prefer the partially shaded and temperate area of the house. For the most part, they have no special resting phase but once the shoot growth is complete they can flower. The plant material should dry to 2/3 before being poured again. A rule of thumb is that you water once a week and fertilize weakly with half of the stated concentration for every 2nd to 3rd "pouring time". Tip: Most Intergeneric Hybrids are so-called bulb orchids and prefer outdoor locations in summer. Pay more attention to pests such as snails or lice.
