Origin:
From Mexico southward throughout tropical South America. Primarily, however, from Peru to Venezuela. Usually growing as an epiphyte on trees or rocks.
Location:
Protected from direct sunlight and dry drafts, e.g., north- or east-facing windows. From May through October, they can also be placed in the garden in a slightly shaded spot. Temperatures between 12 and 14 °C are ideal. Some species can even tolerate temperatures below 10 °C. In any case, a sufficient drop in nighttime temperature is beneficial.
Giessen:
Keep the soil moist at all times. During prolonged periods of cold weather, water sparingly and do not mist.
Fertilizing:
From March through October, apply orchid fertilizer at the recommended concentration every 2nd or 3rd time you water.
Special features:
Many species originate from the cool cloud forests of the tropical mountains, while others come from the warmer forests of the flatter coastal regions. Through the crossbreeding of these species, breeders have created varieties that are more tolerant of heat. These are, in any case, suitable for a well-tempered living space.
