Origin:
In South and Central American countries, mostly in tropical regions. Some species grow at elevations of 1,500 to 1,800 meters and can be kept in cooler conditions during the winter. Phragmipedium orchids are strictly terrestrial orchids.
Location:
A shady spot in a moderate-to-warm area (18–20 °C) of the house. As much light as possible during the winter months.
Giessen:
Keep the soil moist throughout the summer. Water more sparingly in the winter, but never let it dry out completely. For this reason, don’t plant it in pots that are too small.
Fertilizing:
During the summer growing season, add orchid fertilizer at full strength every third time you water. During the winter, add it monthly at half strength.
Special features:
This genus is the American counterpart to the Asian Paphiopedilum and can be easily cultivated alongside them. They produce many unusual flowers one after another on a single flower stalk over an extended period of time.
