APPEARANCE & PREFERENCES
There are more than 100 species of dragon tree. It originates from Madagascar - and is no longer considered an independent species, but a form of Dracaena reflexa (var. angustifolia). As its old botanical name is still used in the trade, we also call it Dracaena marginata. The plant has glossy dark green leaves with burgundy margins that resemble lancets: 20 mm narrow and 30 to 40 cm long. The slender trunk grows - if it has room - to a height of 2.40 metres. After a few years of good care, dragon trees look like palms, but they are not trees and are more closely related to lilies of the valley than to palms. Dracaena marginata prefers a sunny to semi-shady spot, likes to spend the summer on a balcony or patio, but should be allowed to acclimatise slowly to direct sunlight. The Dracaena does not like constant rain, and at temperatures below 10 °C it happily moves back indoors. Benevolent owners will not allow it to dry out, but will keep it moderately moist.
