APPEARANCE & CHARACTERISTICS
There are more than 100 species of dragon tree. This one originates from Madagascar – and is no longer considered a separate species, but rather a form of Dracaena reflexa (var. angustifolia). As its old botanical name is still used in the trade, we too refer to it as Dracaena marginata. The plant has glossy dark-green leaves edged in burgundy, resembling lancets: 20 mm wide and 30 to 40 cm long. The slender trunk grows – if given enough space – to a height of 2.40 m. After a few years of good care, dragon trees look like palm trees, but they are not actually trees and are more closely related to lily of the valley than to palms. Dracaena marginata prefers a sunny to semi-shaded spot, enjoys spending the summer on a balcony or terrace, but should be allowed to acclimatise to direct sunlight gradually. The dracaena does not like constant rain, and at temperatures below 10 °C it is happy to be brought indoors. Caring owners do not let it dry out, but keep it only moderately moist.
