Masdevallia
Special botanical characteristics and notes for Masdevallia
There are two different groups of Masdevallia. These are the cool-growing species and the temperate-growing species.
Masdevallia is with 300 species an averagely large genus. It is divided into cool and temperate growing species all of which originate from Mexico, Peru and Venezuela. In the wild, Masdevallia grow on trees and rocks, but some species also live on the ground and prefer to be evenly moist. There are no limits to the variety of colours and shapes. There are small miniature species, but also really large-leaved ones with lush flowers in bright colours. Over the years, orchid growers have developed heat-tolerant varieties that are very suitable for the windowsill.
Orchids of the Masdevallia genus are particularly fascinating and unique for several reasons:
1. unusual flower shape: Masdevallia orchids are known for their unique, often triangular flowers, which are formed by the fusion of the sepals (petals). This unusual shape clearly distinguishes them from other orchids and gives them an exotic appearance.
2. variety of flower colours and patterns: The flowers of Masdevallia orchids come in an amazing variety of colours, including vibrant shades such as red, orange, yellow, pink, purple and white. Some species also have interesting patterns and stripes that add to their beauty.
3. cool growing conditions: Masdevallia orchids thrive best in cooler temperatures, making them particularly attractive to growers in temperate climates. They are adapted to life in the moist, cool cloud forests of the Andes, making them a challenge but also a reward for experienced orchid enthusiasts.
4. compact size: These orchids tend to be compact, making them ideal for smaller spaces or for keeping in orchid display cases. Despite their small size, they offer an impressive display of flowers.
5 Flowering frequency and duration: Masdevallia orchids can bloom several times a year, and their flowers often last for several weeks, making them a long-lasting ornamental. Some species flower almost continuously under the right conditions.
6. versatility in presentation: Due to their compact size and preference for cool, moist conditions, Masdevallia orchids are often found in terrariums or specialised orchid display cases. They can also be cultivated in hanging baskets or tied up on cork bark, which offers versatile presentation options.
Care tips for Masdevallia orchids
You should always a bright but draught-protected location. from draughts. Masdevallia can be kept in a slightly shaded outdoor area throughout the summer. In summer, 18 °C would be ideal with a night-time temperature reduction to 10 °C. In winter, a constant 12 °C is completely sufficient. The substrate, which can be fine, should never dry out, but should be watered a little more sparingly in winter. Above all spraying the leaves should then be avoided. Please only ever fertilise lightly.
1st light: Masdevallia orchids prefer weak to moderate, indirect light. They should be protected from direct sunlight, as this can lead to leaf burns. A location near a north or east-facing window is ideal.
2. temperature: These orchids prefer cool temperatures. Ideally, daytime temperatures should be between 15-20°C, while night-time temperatures can drop to 10-15°C. Excessively high temperatures can have a negative effect on growth and flower formation.
3. watering: Masdevallia orchids require even moisture, but should not stand in water. The substrate should be kept evenly moist, but waterlogging must be avoided to prevent root rot.
4. humidity: These orchids thrive best in high humidity, ideally between 60-80%. In drier environments, a humidifier or regular spraying of the plant may be necessary.
5. air circulation: Good air circulation is important to prevent fungal diseases, especially in high humidity conditions. A fan can help to keep the air moving.
6. substrate: Use a well-drained orchid substrate that retains moisture but remains airy. A mixture of fine bark, sphagnum moss and perlite works well for Masdevallia orchids.
7 Fertilisation: Fertilise the orchid every fortnight during the growing season (spring and summer) with a low-dose orchid fertiliser. Fertilisation can be reduced in autumn and winter.
8 Repotting: Masdevallia orchids should be repotted every one to two years to ensure fresh substrate and promote good root health. The best time to repot is after flowering or in early spring.
Masdevallia orchids offer a special challenge and reward for orchid lovers who are prepared to provide the cool, moist conditions that these exceptional plants require.
