Zygopetalum is the absolute super-grower among orchids. Most varieties have a very pleasant scent.
The 40 or so varieties, most of which grow in South America occurring in South America like to grow at higher altitudes on humus-rich forest soils. The blue colour has been bred into the lip of this species. This is another reason why it is highly sought after.

Zygopetalum always needs sufficient water and nutrients. They thrive in a semi-shady, well-ventilated, not too warm spot on the windowsill. As soil-growing orchids, Zygopetalum require an evenly moist substrate. Like all bulb orchids, Zygopetalum also loves the cooler nights in summer and can therefore tolerate a semi-shady outdoor location. Repot every 1.5-2 years due to the strong root growth.
