Orchids in flower

The beautiful colors of the orchid flowers, their artful forms and beguiling fragrances have enchanted us for centuries.

But actually they try to impress insects. Because with their flowers orchids promote the attention of their pollinators, in order to be ahead in the race of reproduction. How nice that they make an effort to be pretty, even though they will never reach an insect in our home.

The variety of orchid flowers makes collecting these precious pieces so appealing. There are orchids with tiny flowers only a few millimeters in size (Bulbophyllum monoliforme) and those that are fifty times larger than these smallest ones. Interestingly, you will find no natural light blue flowers, but green ones. Their beauty can comfort over the long wait until the next blossom. It sometimes comes only once a year.

When you buy an orchid, it is often declared as flowering or strongly flowering. This means that it is currently out of flower, but old enough to flower in the foreseeable future. In addition to flowering strength and exciting shapes, colors and scents, orchid cultivation also selects for the durability of the flowers. As a result, record-breaking flowering times have been achieved in Phalaenopsis, which can be measured in months rather than weeks.

orchids in flower

Thanks to the breeding success, it takes nowadays only minimal effort and no special technique to bring an orchid to flower repeatedly. But who wants to help it, can set targeted attracktions. For some species, e.g. Dendrobium Phalaenopsis, it may be helpful in the fall to spend a few weeks in the fall in a cooler room (not below 15 ° C) at night, to encourage the next flowering.

In general, orchids like an occasional change of scenery. As you clean the windowsill, take them to a different location, maybe even in a different room with a different temperature, which will keep them vital. If the plant is well, it regularly produces flowers on its own.

Thanks to good breeding success, some varieties sometimes bloom twice a year or even almost all year round. And then? A withered stalk is no cause for sadness. Did you know that Phalaenopsis can even drive out of a withered stalk again, if you cut it about one-third or cut it off over the second or third eye?

At what season an orchid flowers is due to the species, it is best to take the flowering time of each species description. Many are in the spring between February and May in Blouhlaune, in others, however, one can expect the flowering year-round.

Since orchids are epiphytes, their stems, unlike other flowering plants, like to grow sideways or even down. In order to bring the stems of standing orchids in a respectable upright position, they are therefore fixed to wooden stalks when buying. If you have removed the rod after wilting the flower, you should reattach it at the next flowering. It should be as close as possible to the base of the stem and, if possible, should lie close to the flower stem along its entire length, so that it is not bent too much or even kinked. Just under two inches below the lowest flower he is fixed with a clamp.

If flowers wither prematurely, it may have different causes. It is not necessarily a sign of care mistakes, but may be location-related. Orchids should never be placed near fruit bowls. Fruits produce ethylene when it ripens, a gas that is not smelling to us, but leaves the flowers to fall asleep.

In addition, orchids do not like locations in freshly painted or wallpapered rooms at all, because the solvent fumes make them even more difficult while we barely notice them. Occasionally nearby gas connections may be the cause of too short flowering periods. Whether a gas connection is located nearby, the owner can check in case of doubt. However, it is not a bad idea to first check if the orchid substrate is too moist. Too frequent watering and consequently sick roots, which no longer provide sufficient care for the plant, can be the cause of blooming flowers too fast. In addition, while an orchid is blooming you should not repot it, which also harms the flowering success.
