Special botanical characteristics and notes for the genus Miltonia

Under the term Miltonia was used for many years to summarise species similar in habit. Today, only a few species are considered Miltonia. The home of Miltonia is Central and South America. Although this genus has been reorganised and not many species remain, the name Miltonia is still used consistently. This is also due to the fact that the worldwide breeding work has produced thermophilic varieties by crossing other genera. Miltonia can be found in many of the so-called multi-genus hybrids.

The orchids of the Miltonia genus, also known as "pansy orchids", are special and unique for several reasons:
1. pansy-like flowers: Miltonia orchids are known for their showy flowers, which often resemble pansies. These flowers usually have a flat shape and a distinctive lip, which is often in a contrasting colour. The flowers can appear in colours such as white, pink, yellow, red and purple, often with complex patterns or stripes.
2. pleasant fragrance: Many Miltonia orchids give off a pleasant, sweet fragrance, especially in the morning hours. The fragrance varies depending on the species and variety, which makes these orchids a particularly attractive choice for indoor use.
3. long flowering period: Miltonia orchids have a long flowering period. Under the right conditions, they can flower for several weeks to months, and some species can flower several times a year. This long-lasting flowering splendour makes them a popular choice for orchid lovers.
4. ease of care: Compared to some other orchid genera, Miltonia orchids are relatively easy to care for. They are less sensitive to temperature fluctuations and can thrive indoors under the right conditions.
5 Epiphytic growth: Like many orchids, Miltonia species often grow epiphytically, meaning they grow on trees in the wild. This way of growing makes them well suited for cultivation in pots, orchid baskets or even tied up on bark.
6. versatility: There is a division into "true" Miltonia orchids, which originate from Brazil and prefer slightly warmer conditions, and the related Miltoniopsis orchids, which prefer cooler conditions and are often found in the Andes. Both groups offer a variety of options for different climates and cultivation methods.

Special orchid care tips for Miltonia (pansy orchid)

Miltonia needs a temperate to cool and light to semi-shady spot to protect it from burns. In summer, it is advantageous to keep it outdoors. During the growth phase, Miltonia should be watered thoroughly without waterlogging. In winter, water moderately but ensure that the bulbs do not shrivel excessively. During the growth phase, fertiliser may be applied once a month at half concentration.

1st light: Miltonia orchids prefer bright, indirect light. A position near an east or west-facing window is ideal. Too intense sunlight can burn the leaves, while too little light can impair flower formation.
2. temperatureMiltonia orchids thrive best in moderate temperatures. During the day, temperatures should be between 18-24°C, while night temperatures can drop to 12-16°C. They appreciate a certain drop in temperature at night, which can encourage flower formation.
3. watering: Miltonia orchids like to be kept evenly moist, but without the substrate being waterlogged. Water the plant regularly, but allow the substrate to dry out slightly before watering again. They do not tolerate long periods of drought.
4. humidityThese orchids prefer a high humidity of 50-70%. In drier environments, a humidifier or regular spraying of the plant can be helpful.
5. substrate: Use a well-drained orchid substrate that retains moisture but remains airy. A mixture of fine bark, sphagnum moss and perlite is well suited for Miltonia orchids.
6 Fertilisation: Fertilise the orchid every fortnight during the growing season (spring and summer) with a low-dose orchid fertiliser. In autumn and winter, fertilisation can be reduced to once a month.
7 Repotting: Miltonia orchids should be repotted every one to two years to ensure fresh substrate and promote good root health. The best time to repot is after flowering or in early spring.

By following these care tips and knowing the special characteristics of Miltonia orchids, you can optimally care for and enjoy these fascinating plants.
