APPEARANCE & PREFERENCES
Africans use the tough leaf fibres of this plant to make strings for their hunting bows – hence the name snake plant. The fact that it is also known as mother-in-law’s tongue may be due to its pointed, upright leaves: these can grow to a good 120 cm in height. With good care, delicate, fragrant flower spikes appear after a few years. Decades ago, the Sansevieria was a fixture in virtually every living room; it then fell out of fashion, but is now making a comeback: its new admirers find that the plant’s clean, graphic silhouette fits perfectly into a modern setting. The snake plant thrives even in less than ideal locations, though it does dislike draughts. It copes better with dry conditions than with too much water. If the soil is waterlogged, it is prone to root rot, which can be recognised by the leaves turning brownish. Otherwise, it is extremely rarely affected by diseases or pests.
ABILITIES
Sansevierias are hardy, purify the air of benzene and trichloroethylene – and can safely be placed in the bedroom, as they absorb CO₂ at night rather than during the day, thereby increasing the oxygen levels in the room. Family: Asparagaceae (asparagus family) or Agavaceae (agave family) Names: Mother-in-law’s tongue, bayonet plant, African sisal
