APPEARANCE & PREFERENCES
Africans use the tough leaf fibres of this plant to make sinews for their hunting bows - hence the name bow hemp. The fact that it is also known as mother-in-law's tongue may be due to its pointed, upright leaves: These can sprout a good 120 cm high. With good care, delicate, fragrant flower panicles appear after a few years. Decades ago, the Sansevieria was a guest in practically every living room, then it fell out of fashion, but is now celebrating its comeback: the new admirers find that the plant's graphically clear figure fits perfectly into the modern ambience. Even in less than ideal locations, the bow hemp thrives, the only thing it dislikes is draughts. It copes better with drought than with too much water. In a wet location, it suffers from root rot, which can be recognised by the brownish colour of the leaves. Otherwise, it is very rarely affected by diseases or pests.
CAPABILITIES
Sansevieria is robust, cleans the air of benzene and trichloroethylene - and can be safely moved into the bedroom, as it does not absorb CO2 during the day but at night, thus increasing the oxygen content in the room. Family: Asparagaceae (asparagus family) or Agavaceae (agave family) Names: Mother-in-law's tongue, bayonet plant, African sisal
