Odontoglossum
In the middle of the 18th century, the most expensive ever-traded orchid from this genus was brought to Europe. Converted it cost € 150,000.
The breeder, who bought this expensive orchid at the time, was also her murderer. He did not know that most species of Odontoglossum come from the high altitudes of the tropical mountains of South America and therefore need cool cultivation. A few species have warmer site claims and these the orchid breeders used to breed Odontoglossum for the domestic area.
Special orchid care instructions for Odontoglossum
A temperate winter garden with moderate sunlight is ideal for Odontoglossum. In order to bring the desired higher humidity to the plant, one can use window shells into which pebbles and water are filled. A even substrate moisture is important. Therefore, never let the planting material dry out, but watch out for waterlogging for the sensitive shrubs. So, pervade water thoroughly and drain well. Water a little less in winter. Fertilize every 14 days with low concentration and do not fertilize in winter.
